Netherlands Court of Audit in EU Trend Report: fund the most effective EU projects

The selection of projects funded by the EU pays too little attention to their effectiveness.

The principle of 'first come, first served' should be abandoned; the projects selected should offer the greatest possible effectiveness at the lowest possible cost. This conclusion is presented in the EU Trend Report 2014, which the Court of Audit published today. In 2012, the Netherlands remitted approximately €6 billion to the European Union's total budget of €139.5 billion. EU citizens have a right to expect this money to be spent effectively, efficiently and in accordance with the regulations. And the information on how the funds are spent should be published.
