The Board of the Netherlands Court of Audit proposes that Mark Smolenaars be appointed as its Secretary-General. The Secretary-General is the Court’s senior administrative official, responsible for the audit institution’s day-today operation. The Court of Audit is headed by its Board, consisting of Pieter Duisenberg (President), Ewout Irrgang (member) and Barbara Joziasse (member).
The decision of 24 March 2026 on his appointment follows a careful selection procedure. Mark has been acting Secretary-General since 15 October 2025, when his predecessor, Cornelis van der Werf, left the Court after almost 8 years.
Mark Smolenaars has held a variety of positions at the Court since 2000.
President Duisenberg said: "Mark combines extensive experience and knowledge of the Court with an external focus and innovative ideas, he has what it takes to make our organisation fit for the future. Together with all our colleagues at the Court, I am confident that Mark will fulfil the role of Secretary-General with conviction.”
“I know the organisation and the people well,” says Mark, “and appreciate the skill and commitment on display at the Court every day. It’s an honour to be entrusted with this role to build a strong and independent Court of Audit that is alert to societal change and remains relevant to parliament and society.”
After completion of the security clearance and being sworn in by the King, Mark Smolenaars will be officially appointed at an extraordinary Board meeting.
