Consequences of strengthening European economic and budgetary supervision set out in report

The Court of Audit published a report entitled European economic governance – European coordination of budgetary and macroeconomic policy and the position of the Netherlands on 9 September 2014.

The report considers the rules that have recently been added to existing EU agreements and their potential influence on the Dutch budgetary and accounting process, and the role played by various national institutions. The regulations affect parliament’s right to approve budgetary and macroeconomic policy and to approve the budget. The Court of Audit raises a number of relevant points in the report regarding the democratic scrutiny exercised by parliament.
